Allergic conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis is a condition that involves inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by an allergic reaction.  It is very common, and affects both adults and children and is a hypersensitivity reaction to airborne allergens.

There are 2 main types:
  • Seasonal in which the most common allergen is pollen
  • Perennial in which the most common allergen is house-dust mites
Symptoms:
  • Red, itchy, watery eyes which may be associated with sneezing.
  • Both eyes are usually affected at the same time.

Treatment:

Treatment is multifaceted:

  • Medical treatment to ensure alleviation of symptoms
  • Avoidance of allergens
  • Maintenance therapy to avoid exacerbations of the disease
