Allergic conjunctivitis
Allergic conjunctivitis is a condition that involves inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by an allergic reaction. It is very common, and affects both adults and children and is a hypersensitivity reaction to airborne allergens.
There are 2 main types:
- Seasonal in which the most common allergen is pollen
- Perennial in which the most common allergen is house-dust mites
Symptoms:
- Red, itchy, watery eyes which may be associated with sneezing.
- Both eyes are usually affected at the same time.

Treatment is multifaceted:
- Medical treatment to ensure alleviation of symptoms
- Avoidance of allergens
- Maintenance therapy to avoid exacerbations of the disease
